ABSTRACT

As a part of my senior seminar course, I chose to focus on two of my favorite subjects: 19th century literature and film criticism. This is done in combination with my personal interest in the horror genre. I analyzed Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein and James Whale's 1931 film. Both are the same story, yet told in contrasting interpretations of what it means to be man and monster. Mary Shelley's work as a writer allowed for progress for women in the field, particularly with Frankenstein. Her novel discusses identity and humanity in ways that modern cinematic versions have lost. In adhering to the conventions of the horror genre of film, James Whale’s 1931 Frankenstein film loses novel’s the original message on identity in Mary Shelley’s novel.
